Energy Trends Alexander Christodoulakis

Ever since the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels like coal and oil have been fueling innovation and society. In recent years, the damages to the environment that come from burning these fossil fuels have been thoroughly documented, and now many countries around the world are moving toward renewable energy as their primary source to fuel their infrastructure. As we enter a new year, be on the lookout for these trends and advancements in sustainable energy that will likely make the news.

Companies will continue to pledge to renewables

As consumers are becoming more aware of the negative effects of fossil fuels, companies have been moving progressively toward renewable energy and this trend will likely continue moving forward. Companies like Netflix and the food company Mars have made significant changes to their company model to make their operations as sustainable and environmentally-friendly as possible. In 2018, it’s fair to say that we will continue to see these positive changes in the private sector.

Wind Energy

The wind has been used for thousands of years as a source of energy. At the end of 2016, there were nearly 350 thousand wind turbines in use that helped the earth keep over 637 million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere. While this technology has become more prevalent around the world, it still has room for improvement.

Solar Energy

Last year, major innovations in solar energy were developed to make this kind of energy creation more effective and efficient to be used on a larger scale. For many countries, the upfront cost of solar energy for individual homes is sky-high making it an unpractical option for many people. As innovations in solar continue, it could pave the way for this energy source to become a viable source of energy for businesses and personal use.

Electric cars

In 2016, the United States had about 540,000 electric cars on the road, but considering there are approximately 250 million cars in the US, these electric cars account for a relatively small amount of cars for the population. This year will bring about new electric car models that have incredible performance standards and luxury components.
